Cultural Catholics: Implications for Catholic Higher Education
According to a recent national survey, 53% of people who identify as Catholic attend Mass just a few times per year or less frequently. How might we better reach these students, faculty and staff who still hold a Catholic identity, but aren’t the usual suspects frequenting our university ministries? Discern the data with sociologist Dr. Maureen Day and university president Dr. Sinda Vanderpool as we think through how to apply the findings to your campus community.

Leading with Wisdom and Mercy in These Disruptive Times
The Catholic Church, through its ministries, has been the largest non-governmental provider of education, healthcare, poverty relief, social services, and refugee resettlement in the world, serving millions of people across the US and in more than 100 countries each year. The Value and Values of Athletics at Catholic Colleges & Universities
Athletics has long played a distinctive role in American higher education — as a vehicle for student development, institutional identity, and community connection. For Catholic institutions, athletics has also historically intersected deeply with mission: the formation of the whole person, community and school spirit, and advancing the common good. Yet the landscape is changing rapidly and threatens to challenge the values if not the value of our Catholic institutions. Presidents from diverse backgrounds and athletically diverse schools will explore the current athletic reality and reflect on the changing environment.

Combining General and Specific Education: The “Secret Sauce” of Economic Vitality
As Catholic higher education reconciles its foundational commitment to the arts and humanities with increasing pressure from employers, regulators and our own families to prepare students for careers, this session focuses on the “both/and.” The new CEW values framework presents a strong case for the continuing importance of a liberal arts education. At the same time, Catholic “opportunity” colleges and universities, those serving large numbers of first-generation, lower income students, are combining general and specific offerings with strong outcomes. Tensions persist.

Daring to Walk Together: Integrating DEI and Mission Through Synodality
Big shifts are underway in the Catholic Church towards synodality, a Church characterized by encounter, stories, listening, dialogue, communal discernment, and centering those on the margins. We will consider — experientially — how synodality can ground our missional commitments to building together communities characterized by diversity, equity, and inclusion.

An American Pope: Opportunities for Catholic Higher Education
This panel will explore how Pope Leo’s Augustinian charism can offer a renewed focus on community and truth-seeking in Catholic institutions. Panelists will also reflect on the significance of his election and the dynamics of the conclave, examining what the pope’s multifaceted leadership on three continents signals for the Church’s global mission. The panel will also highlight how Catholic social teaching under his papacy offers both a challenge and an opportunity for higher education to deepen its commitment to justice, dialogue, and bridge building.
