to Catholic Higher Education


The Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities (ACCU) invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for its president. The expected starting date is July 1, 2019.

The Board of Directors expects the next president to be Catholic and has a strong preference for a person who has served as president or at the cabinet level of a Catholic college or university. A terminal degree is required, as well as at least five years of executive experience. The next president must have a solid understanding of contemporary higher education to include higher education policy at the federal level; the legal environment affecting Catholic higher education, and the governance, finances, and social, political, and cultural issues affecting campus life.

A Message from the ACCU Board Chair

As chair of the ACCU Board of Directors, I want to convey to you how grateful the Board is to Michael for his years of service to the organization. Under Michael’s leadership, ACCU has grown in staffing and in programming, as well as in prominence. We can thank him for a reinvigorated Annual Meeting, strengthened relationships with the Church, a more consistent and positive voice in the media, original programs aimed at new and rising campus leaders, and so much more. Michael’s perspectives and energy have driven the association to accomplish great things and those efforts will bear fruit for many years to come.

As we seek to appoint his successor, the Board of Directors remains highly engaged in the search process. The search committee consists of a subset of Board members, and the timeline of the process has been set to ensure a smooth transition of leadership.

The Board is most grateful to Academic Search Inc. for coordinating the search, under the leadership of one of their senior consultants, Dr. Rick Artman. As president emeritus of Viterbo University (WI), president of Siena Heights University (MI) from 1994 to 2006, and former member of the ACCU Board of Directors, Rick brings a depth of knowledge about both Catholic higher education and ACCU that is an excellent complement to the search.

The Search Committee highly values applications from presidents and cabinet members of Catholic colleges and universities. Few executives have the potential to affect the national conversation on Catholic higher education as does the president of ACCU. The president builds rich relationships with the leaders of Catholic colleges and universities around the world, bishops and cardinals, members of the Curia, elected officials, thought leaders in higher education, and others interested in serving their institutions and the Church. We are excited to identify the next leader of ACCU who will strengthen these relationships and lead the organization into the future.

Applications

To apply, a candidate should prepare a thoughtful letter of interest addressing, as appropriate, the issues and highly valued qualifications outlined in the profile. Include a current, long-form résumé (it should show relevant responsibilities and accomplishments) and the names, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses of at least five references and the candidate’s relationship to each reference. References will be called at a later stage and only with the candidate’s foreknowledge.
