Colleges & Universities
The following list represents 251 Catholic degree-granting institutions in the United States. This list was compiled using the following guidelines:
- The institution was listed in the 2005 Index produced by the Congregation for Catholic Education[1] OR
- The institution was listed in the 2010 Official Catholic Directory[2] under the subheading ‘Seminaries’ or ‘Colleges and Universities’ OR
- The institution was listed in the 2010 Official Catholic Directory under some other subheading but offers a degree OR
- The institution was not listed in the 2005 Index or the 2010 Official Catholic Directory, but the Bishop of the diocese where the institution is located has submitted a formal letter of recognition of the institution AND
- The institution offers degrees for lay students AND
- The institution is financially, academically, or for accreditation purposes, independent of any other institution.
This list includes those seminaries that offer degrees for lay students, as well as independent institutes that offer degrees. The definitions above, while informing the qualifications for membership to ACCU, are not the sole determinants for ACCU membership. Because Catholic higher education in the United States is dynamic, some information on these institutions was gathered through direct contact with the appropriate staff at either the institution or the diocesan level.[3]
